Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease of cats that can affect other species including humans. There have been recent articles in the press and online. Unfortunately some of those articles have been sensational and causing unnecessary worry.
While contact with cats is one source of infection, it is believed that eating infected raw meat is the most common cause of infection in most countries.
Toxoplasmosis is not a risk to the vast majority of the human population. the exceptions are pregnant women and those with severely compromised immune systems. Even in those individuals, basic hygiene and wearing gloves dramatically reduces infection rates. Pregnant women should avoid emptying litter trays, handling cat faeces and gardening where the soil may be contaminated with cat faeces
